What Is Deep Sleep?

Deep sleep — formally known as slow-wave sleep (SWS) or NREM Stage 3 — is the sleep stage characterized by synchronized delta brain waves oscillating at 0.5-4 Hz. It is the most neurologically distinct state from wakefulness, the most difficult stage to be aroused from, and the most physically restorative phase of the sleep cycle. The Numbers: How Much Deep Sleep Is Normal?

Healthy young adults aged 18-25 spend approximately 20-25% of their total sleep in deep slow-wave sleep. For an 8-hour sleep period, this corresponds to approximately 96-120 minutes of deep sleep. This proportion decreases progressively across the lifespan.
